5-Day Tambopata Amazon Tour

The 5-Day Tambopata Amazon Tour is designed for travelers who want a deeper Tambopata jungle tour from Puerto Maldonado, combining five different experiences that show the diversity of the Tambopata rainforest. During your stay, you'll navigate the Tambopata River at sunset, explore the rainforest canopy from the Canopy Tower and suspended Canopy Walkways, visit Yacumama Lake and Lake Sandoval, meet a Harakbut family, discover the conservation work carried out at the Taricaya Wildlife Rescue Center, explore the rainforest after dark on a guided Night Jungle Walk, and finish your Amazon journey watching hundreds of parrots gathering at a traditional Parrot Clay Lick.

Day 1 – Arrival in Puerto Maldonado & Tambopata River Sunset

Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, our staff will welcome you at the airport, bus station, or your hotel before transferring you to the lodge. After lunch, your first excursion begins with a boat ride along the Tambopata River during the late afternoon, one of the best times to observe Amazon wildlife such as monkeys, riverside birds, turtles, and capybaras as they become more active before sunset.

As darkness falls over the Tambopata rainforest, we'll continue navigating with flashlights in search of Spectacled Caimans, also known as White Caimans. Their eyes reflect brightly in the darkness, making nighttime one of the best moments to observe them. Capybaras and other nocturnal animals are also frequently encountered before returning to the lodge for dinner.

Day 2 – Canopy Tower, Canopy Walkways & Yacumama Lake

After breakfast, we'll climb the Canopy Tower and cross the suspended Canopy Walkways, two highlights of this Tambopata Amazon tour. From above the rainforest canopy, you'll enjoy panoramic views over the Amazon forest, a habitat used by toucans, parrots, aracaris, tanagers, woodpeckers, monkeys, and occasionally raptors soaring above the trees.

In the afternoon, we'll visit Yacumama Lake, a quiet oxbow lake near Puerto Maldonado where we'll explore by boat while searching for aquatic birds, turtles, monkeys, and other wildlife living around its shores. Before sunset, you'll experience traditional piranha fishing using local techniques before continuing with another nocturnal search for caimans around the lake using flashlights.

Day 3 – Harakbut Family & Lake Sandoval in Tambopata National Reserve

Following breakfast, we'll visit a Harakbut family, descendants of one of the oldest indigenous peoples of southeastern Peru. During this cultural experience in the Peruvian Amazon, you'll learn about their traditions, handicrafts, medicinal plants, hunting tools, and the close relationship they have maintained with the rainforest for generations.

After lunch, we'll travel to Lake Sandoval, one of the most famous wildlife destinations inside the Tambopata National Reserve. The journey begins with a 3-kilometer walk through primary rainforest, where Brown Capuchin Monkeys, Squirrel Monkeys, butterflies, colorful birds, and occasionally sloths can be observed along the trail.

At the end of the trail, the forest opens into an impressive Palm Swamp Forest. From here, we'll board a traditional rowing canoe to explore Lake Sandoval while searching for emblematic Amazon wildlife, including Giant River Otters, Black Caimans, Hoatzins, turtles, kingfishers, herons, monkeys, and numerous aquatic birds. After exploring one of the top natural attractions in Tambopata, we'll return along the same trail before heading back to the lodge.

Day 4 – Taricaya Wildlife Rescue Center & Night Jungle Walk

After breakfast, we'll travel by boat to the Taricaya Wildlife Rescue Center, an important conservation project in the Tambopata region where animals rescued from illegal wildlife trafficking and other human-related threats receive veterinary care and rehabilitation. During the visit, you'll learn about the center’s conservation work and observe several native Amazon species undergoing rehabilitation.

We'll then continue through the forest to the impressive Ceiba Tree Canopy Platform, built around one of the largest trees in the Amazon. From the observation platform, you'll enjoy panoramic views across the rainforest canopy while searching for parrots, toucans, monkeys, and other wildlife moving through the upper forest layer.

After lunch and some time to rest at the lodge, we'll return to the rainforest after sunset for a guided Night Jungle Walk, one of the most exciting activities on a Tambopata jungle tour. Equipped with flashlights, we'll search for frogs, tarantulas, spiders, stick insects, praying mantises, sleeping birds, reptiles, and many other nocturnal creatures that remain hidden during daylight hours.

Day 5 – Parrot Clay Lick & Return to Puerto Maldonado

Before sunrise, we'll visit a nearby Parrot Clay Lick, one of the classic wildlife experiences in Tambopata. Every morning, hundreds of parrots and parakeets gather to feed on mineral-rich clay. Among the species frequently observed are Blue-headed Parrots, Dusky-headed Parakeets, Chestnut-fronted Macaws, Blue-headed Macaws, and several species of small green parrots. Watching these colorful flocks descend to the clay bank during the first light of the day is one of the most memorable moments of this 5-day Amazon tour from Puerto Maldonado.

After returning to the lodge, breakfast will be served before check-out. Guests with early departures may be transferred directly after breakfast, while those with later schedules can relax at the lodge until their transfer to Puerto Maldonado Airport, the bus station, or their hotel, closing a complete Tambopata Amazon experience with rainforest, wildlife, culture, lakes, canopy views, and river landscapes.
