The 2-Day Tambopata Amazon Tour is designed for travelers who want to experience the Peruvian Amazon in a short time without missing its most rewarding wildlife activities. Staying at our comfortable jungle lodge near Puerto Maldonado, you'll explore the rainforest during the hours when wildlife is most active, combining sunset river navigation, nocturnal wildlife observation, sunrise birdwatching, and a traditional piranha fishing experience.
Day 1 – Tambopata River Sunset & Nocturnal Wildlife
Your adventure begins with a warm welcome in Puerto Maldonado, where our staff will meet you at the airport, bus station, or your hotel before transferring you to the lodge. After settling into your room, enjoy a traditional Amazonian lunch and take some time to relax before your first excursion.
In the afternoon, board a motorized canoe to explore the beautiful Tambopata River as the sun begins to set over the rainforest. During this scenic navigation, you'll have the opportunity to observe monkeys, colorful birds returning to their nesting sites, turtles, and capybaras along the riverbanks while enjoying one of the Amazon's most beautiful sunsets.
As darkness falls, the excursion continues with a completely different perspective of the rainforest. Using flashlights, your guide will search for the glowing red eyes of black caimans hidden along the river's edge. The riverbanks are also an excellent place to look for capybaras and other nocturnal wildlife that become active after sunset, making this one of the most exciting experiences of the tour.
After returning to the lodge, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner before spending the night surrounded by the sounds of the Amazon rainforest.
Day 2 – Yacumama Lake Sunrise & Birdwatching
Before sunrise, you'll depart for Yacumama Lake, one of the region's best locations for observing Amazon wildlife during the early morning hours. As the rainforest awakens, the calm waters of the lake provide outstanding opportunities to spot macaws, parrots, kingfishers, herons, hoatzins, cormorants, and many other bird species in their natural habitat.
The excursion also includes traditional piranha fishing, allowing you to experience one of the Amazon's best-known local traditions while surrounded by the peaceful scenery of the lake. After the activity, you'll return to the lodge for breakfast.
Following breakfast, guests with early flights can be transferred directly to Puerto Maldonado Airport, the bus station, or their hotel. Travelers departing later are welcome to relax at the lodge until the standard check-out time before their scheduled transfer.
This carefully planned itinerary combines two of the best times for wildlife observation in Tambopata—sunset on the river and sunrise at Yacumama Lake—offering an authentic Amazon experience in just two days. It's the perfect option for travelers with limited time who want to maximize their chances of observing the incredible wildlife and natural beauty of the Peruvian Amazon.
